Bowflex's success
Bowflex is the second name adopted by a company that produces various home and commercial pieces of exercise equipment; the company has recently changed its name to Nautilus, Inc. They have received a great deal of notoriety over the past decade due to heavy usage of television infomercials. The Bowflex machine itself was invented by an Ethiopian engineering student pursuing a degree in San Francisco, California. However, his patent would expire and the company Bowflex of America would use his design to found their company. The Bowflex Company has also introduced a device related to a treadmill called the Treadclimber.
The original Bowflex home gyms were crafted from sets of polymer rods that would stress the body parts used with constant tension. A key factor behind the Bowflex's success was that it was easy to use and would take up much less space than the typical weights and pulleys used in bodybuilding. In 2006 Bowflex, now known as Nautilus, Inc., would introduce a new design for their home gyms. They replaced the polymer rods with circular plates containing bands coiled around cams. These new Bowflexes could be manipulated much easier to allow for a greater variation in exercises and ease of use.
